About Me |
My Teaching Philosophy |
- I was born and raised in Texas, and I attended Seventh-day Adventist schools my whole life, from Keene Adventist Elementary School, through Chisholm Trail Academy and Southwestern Adventist University. I double majored in English and Social Science, and I also hold two minors, one in Religion and another in Radio/TV/Film.
Shortly before being hired at North Shore(meaning 1 year previously), I married the love of my life, Katie. No we don't have any children. Yet. Although I suppose in a sense I already have a great many children. Teaching, while challenging, has also been very rewarding for me, and I imagine it will continue to be so all my life. Few things are as joyous for me as seeing a student learn and grow academically and spiritually. Not so secretly, I also harbor a desire to be an author, which comes through in my focus on writing in the classroom. I love nature, history, literature, technology, and I have a fondness for pop culture and media, but above all else I love family, friends and God. |
- I firmly believe that education, firstly, should be equal parts the guidance of a knowledgeable mentor figure and the free construction of knowledge through personal, experiential learning. I cannot pour the knowledge in my brain into the student's. People learn by doing - by constructing and being active. I believe in project-based learning.
- Secondly, I believe education should meet the needs of the students, which include not only skills needed for the future workplace, but also the mental and spiritual awareness and fortitude that they will need in their personal and spiritual lives. - Thirdly, education should be intuitive and even fun. I believe that we learn best when we are enjoying the experience, and worst when we are overly stressed. I believe in quality of work over quantity of work, and I believe the games, when properly applied, can improve the learning experience dramatically. - Fourthly, education should continue to improve and change. If I should ever stop trying to improve my teaching methods, I will have stopped being the teacher I need to be. This will, however, mean that there will be some errors and bumps along the way as I learn and grow. Such is the nature of learning. - Fifthly, I believe that education should not just recognize and grade achievement, but also effort and improvement. Determination to improve, and effort to achieve that improvement are values that are applicable to every walk of life, and should be reinforced in the learning process. - Finally, i believe the goal of education should be to help students learn to love learning. Learning does not stop once we have left the school room. Life is a long process of learning, and to love learning, is to love life. |
Contact Me
There are many ways you can contact me, but e-mail or text messaging are probably the best. I don't tend to answer phone calls I don't recognize and my cell is almost always on silent.
